Here is some info I came across on USA.gov just a few days ago:
Heart attacks and strokes are the leading cause of death in the U.S. Major risk factors include high blood pressure, smoking, obesity, high cholesterol and inactivity. If you're at risk, there are steps you can take to improve your heart health! --USA.gov
Unfortunately, most of these risk factors are very common to seniors. The exception? Many who reside in Assisted Living Communities. Why are they the exception?
- Diet & Nutrition. These two factors effect so many of these risk factors. Seniors living alone generally eat very poorly. Whereas, seniors in Assisted Living have dietician approved meals three times daily.
- Community setting. Seniors living alone generally occupy less than 100 square feet daily. From bed to bathroom to kitchen to TV. There is no incentive to stay active and engaged. Whereas, seniors in Assisted Living residents walk to the dining room at least three times a day. The also walk to other areas of the building as needed. Therefore getting much more activity than they would otherwise.
